Abstract Cereals are important in livestock feeding The expanding population demand forprotein and livestock products and lack of balance between number of livestock and feedproduction necessitates the expansion of research programs to increase yield potentials The arid and semi arid conditions in Iran and reduction of rainfall in some years causesdrought stress which limits the crops yields Therefore this study was conducted atResearch Farm of Isfahan University of Technology to evaluate drought tolerance potentialof 20 oat Avena sativa L genotypes including 14 cultivars released in Canada 2 cultivarsreleased in the United States of America and Switzerland and 4 Turkish breeding lines Arandomized complete block design with three replications was used in each irrigationtreatment i e irrigation after 70 3 and 130 3 mm evaporation from class A pan Resultsof analysis of variance revealed significant differences among cultivars for all studied traitsin both irrigation treatments with the exception of plant height at heading stage in bothtreatments plant height at maturity in non stress condition and biological yield in stresscondition The results showed that the stress condition significantly reduced all the traits except tiller m 2 and relative water content RWC However the interaction of genotypesby environment was significant for days to heading and maturity grain and biologicalyields 1000 grain weight RWC and length and width of flag leaf The phenotypic andgenetic correlation coefficients revealed that grain yield had significant and positivecorrelation with harvest index and RWC in both irrigation treatments and with plant heightat maturity in non stress condition Also grain yield had significant and negativecorrelation with days to heading The results of path analysis in both environments showedthat harvest index had the highest positive direct effect on grain yield The highest indirectnegative effects through number of grain per panicle were obtained for the harvest indexand panicle m 2 in stress and non stress conditions respectively To evaluate droughttolerance of the studied cultivars Rosielle and Hamblin tolerance index TOL and meanproductivity MP Fischer and Maurer stress susceptibility index SSI and Fernandezgeometric mean productivity GMP and stress tolerance indices STI were calculatedbased on yield data in stress YS and non stress YP conditions According to the obtainedresults STI was the most effective index to identify tolerant genotypes Based on STI Boyer and Paisley were found to be the most tolerant cultivars
