Abstract Steam power plants are one of major units in the industry of any country Therefore it is an essential task to simulate these units and their components inorder to increase their perfonnance Dry cooling towers are one of the important components among the other components in a steam power plant Among the various parameters affecting a cooling tower wind flow has a considerable effect on the perfonnance of a dry cooling tower It is attempt d in thi s work to simulate his effect by me ans of a numerical simulation using CFD techniques For this purpose first of all the complicated geometry of a HeIer type cooling tower is modeled using a suitable mesh generator Then the governing 3 D Navier Stokes equations are solved by means of a finite volume based code The flow field inside and outside the tower is obtained and the thennal behaviour of the tower heat exchengers are also simulated In this simulation the heat transfer from the hot water to the cooling air is estimated and the results are compared to the existing field measurement results which show a fare agreement d J1 V Lrl V A f
