AbstractTo study the effect of irrigation water salinity and irrigation amount on yield ofcantaloupe Cucumis melD L var cantalupensis under trickle irrigation a fieldexperimentwas conductedusing three different irrigation water salinities of 2 5 and 8dS m as main treatmentsand three different irrigation water amountsof 65 80 and 95percentof evaporationfrom Class A pan eachwith three replications using statisticalsplit plot design The experiment was conducted in Rudasht Salinity and DrainageResearch Center The resultsshowedthat the increasein irrigation water salinity from 2to 5 and from 5 to 8 dS m causedsignificantreductionin fresh fruit yield yield per unitarea numberof fruits and irrigation water use efficiency while the averageweight offruit reducedslightly The increasein irrigation water salinity from 2 to 5 and from 5 to8 dS m causedthe yield per unit areato decrease from 47 245to 42 082 and to 35 232tons per ha The value of threshold toleranceof cantaloupeto EC of soil saturated extract under drip irrigation was found to be about2 16 dS m The yield reductionper unit increase EC of soil saturated in extractwas found to be about 11 5 percentand therelative yield decrease zero at EC of soil saturatedextract to be about 10 9 dS m to According to crop tolerance index and the result of this study the cantaloupecan be classifiedas a moderatesensitivecrop The increasein irrigation water quantitiesfrom 65 to 80 and to 95 percentof evaporationfrom ClassA pan causedan increasein fresh fruit yield yield per unit area numberof fruits averageweight of fruit and irrigation water use efficiency The increasein irrigation water quantity from 65 to 80 and to 95 percentof evaporationfrom Class A pan caused yield per unit areato increasefrom the 31 735 to 38 484 and to 54 339 tons per ha Linear equationwith high coefficient of detennination R2 0 95 was found betw enfresh fruit yield and numberof fruits A secondorder polynomial with high coefficientof detennination R2 0 99 was foundbetweenyield per unit area and amountof applied irrigation water The relationshipbetweenirrigation water use efficiency and the amountof irrigation waterwas found tobe a secondorderpolynomial with high coefficientof determination R2 0 97 whichshows that the cantaloupe is sensitive to deficit irrigation Therefore the use ofirrigation water amountof less than 95 percentof evaporationfrom Class A pan is notrecommended cantaloupe The plants that receivedmore irrigation water produced forfruits with more water content less dry matterand less soluble solid contents glucosepercentage The maximum and minimum amount of fresh fruit yield yield per unitarea numberof fruits irrigation wateruse efficiency and percentage fruit dry matter ofwere belongedto Qtl3 irrigation waterEC of about2 dS mand irrigation water amountequalto 95 percentof evaporationfrom Class A pan and Q3I treatments irrigationwater EC of about 8 dS m and irrigation water amount equal to 65 percent of evaporation from ClassA pan respectively cl I j v r tlf1 f W J w Jt
