Abstract Groundwater is one of the major water resources used for domestic agricultural and Iindustrial purposes especially in arid and semi arid regions Nowadays in addition toquantity problems caused by excessive withdrawal degradation of groundwater quality due to Idischarge of wastewater are an important issue for sustainable development of civil societies Steel industries dispose off large quantities of different pollutants into the environmenteach year Cyanide compounds and heavy metals are among the most dangerous pollutants iwhich are released into the groundwater from metal industries including steel production Iplants I I In this research migration of cyanide nickel and lead downstream of wastewater lagoonsof Foulad Mobarakeh Isfahan Steel Production Plant was investigated using laboratory fieldtests and mathematical modeling Collected groundwater and soil samples were studied bycolumn tests in four columns Columns with different loading rates and soil conditions wereinvestigated Results showed there was an acclimatization period after which degradation ofcyanide starts Degradation followed a zero order reaction rate mechanism Cyanidedegradation rates calculated from column tests were 3 45 3 60 2 46 2 30 Day I Thepresence of metals caused an initial reduction of cyanide which was probably throughcomplex formation Field test included sampling from soil groundwater and lagoons water All samples were tested in central laboratory of Folad steel company Field tests showed thatcyanide nickel and lead concentration in wells placing downstream of lagoons were higherthan standard limits Visual MODFLOW was used for modeling of groundwater and contaminants transportand Physical and hydrodynamic data were collected from different references input to themodel The values of hydrodynamic coefficients were modified during calibration Resultsshowed that pollutants could not move to long distances becauseof high degradation rates forcyanide and high adsorption rates for nickel and lead t i Itf Z t oi lllli i 1
