Abstract In this thesis free and forced vibrations of beams have been investigated taken intoconsideration several theories for various supports The amplitude of forced vibrations hasbeen minimized by defining the best arrangementof attachedmasses springs and supports Atfirst the exact responseof the beam with several different combinations of elastic and ordinarytype of supports attached massesand springs in mid span becauseof harmonic concentratedforce have been studied using dynamic Green s functions method The results are thencompared with the results of other numerical methods For this purpose the dynamic Green sfunctions have been proposed for different combinations of support types of the Euler Bernoulli with the internal and external dampings and axial preload For the Timoshenkobeam the Green s function are also presented Then by obtaining the natural frequencies andresponseof the beam location and amount of the attachedmassesand springs have been fordetermined for the purpose of minimizing the maximum vibration amplitude of the beam Such a fundamental discussion may be used in the designof several structures suchas bridges columns rail roads cranes airplane blades antennas and car chassis and in the design ofmachinery foundations for vibration suppression The equation of motion of the beam hasbecome non linear due to stretching of the mid plan of the beam In this state the vibrations ofbeam have been analyzed with several supports and the results have been compared with theresults of the linear problem Also the responseof the beamdue to the moving force and masshas been studied and the results have beenpresented I e $ l Ail lv i lf I W i i
