j IIII I Abstract Seedsare most important source of plant propagation in rangelands especially in arid and semi arid regions After seed dispersion many seeds go to dormant phase Soil seed reserves are comprized of dormant seeds buried in different layers of topsoil Periodically these seeds will find propcr growing condition for regeneration This research was conducted to determine soil seed reserves correlation of species in soil seed reserves and species of vegetation species composition in soil seed reserves in protected and grazed range sites in Zayandeh roud experimental station Chadegan Isfahan Samples were randomly takon from 0 2 5 and 2 5 to 5 cm of topsoil layers by plots of 25 by 25 cm in summer and winter of 2004 Seeds were separated from soil samples and species were visually determined Many seeds were not determined to species level due to insufficient information s Results indicated that 1 there were more seeds in 0 2 5 cm layers of soil than 2 5 5 cm layer 2 there were mote seeds in summer comp aired to winter in both layers of soil 3 there were more seedsin soil seed reserve of protected than in grazed site 4 about 60 of plant species in seedreserve of soil were presently growing in the vegetation of each site Protected site ofthis research station after 20 years of grazing protection did not have a proper species composition and most of seeds were from invaders and range weed species Obviously investigation of soil seed reserves is ecologically and economicallyjustified and should be accomplished on prior to rehabilitation and management programs of degraded rangelands d I u 1 V Jlt IJf
