AbstractThe aim of this investigation is to study the alternative processesfor surface modification ofcast iron for piston rings Hard chromium as the most conventional coatings process of pistonrings extends the life time up to five times but due to some process problems andenvironmental considerations of chromium bath its use has been limited Among theadvanced surface engineering processes thermal spraying plasma nitriding and physicalvapor deposition have been used for tribological performance of rings in recent researchprograms In this research hard chromium layer on samples of piston rings characterized bymetallurgical tests Thermal spray coating was produced by flame spray machine and a 200 micron thickness of molybdenum was applied on to the rings The electroless Ni P coatingwith 20 micron thickness was applied on the rings industrially and after plating the sampleswere annealed for one hour at a temperature of 400 c Plasma nitriding and physical vapordeposition coatings including metallic chromium and Cr N layers were applied in laboratorysize equipment Structure of the coatings by light microscopy and scanning electronmicroscopy phase detection using X Ray diffraction point analysis using EDS microanalysissystem and hardness measurementby microhardnesstechnique were carried out Finally thewear behavior of gray cast iron samples of piston rings with various surface treatments andcoatings were evaluated and compared by reciprocating wear tests The weight losses of thespecimens were measured and wear mechanisms were determined The results show thatalthough the wear behavior of all the coated samples is improved chromium nitride coatingsdepositecd ion plating technique offer the best wear resistance On the other hand because byof the cost consideration plasma nitriding process could be the preferred alternative for hard chromium layer in this application 11 II fl t Ii i I V JJWI
