Abstract n this research physical vapour deposition processes for the production of chromium and Cr N compound coatings comparson traditional methods and the application of these sur facelayers on a steel substrate has beenstudied PVD coatings were produced on 2567 steel di s c s is one of the common hot work tool steels which has widespread applications this in industry The coatings were optimized in terms of microstructure and morphology The tribogical behavior of the coated sampleswas studied bypin on disc tests The results show that chromium coatings have sufficient adhesion to the substratesprovided that grinding n the vacuum evaporation process the source to substrate distance i s criticalfor the thickness of the coatings in the range of 2 7 microns In order to produce plasma in ion plating process argon gas with the purity of 99 9995 in necessary and the plasma i s effective the voltage range of 200 1700V chromium nitride coatings Cr N were deposited with equal ratios of nitrogen and argon gases In the ion plating process the suitable distance was 5 cm for a thickness of the coating between 4 to 5 microns chromium and chromium nitride coatings deposited by evaporation and ion plating processes had uniform sur face morphology with no porosity Unlike hard chromium coatings which normaly have crack networks in these coatings no crack was detected Coatings structures consist l f copmpact columns that are in accordance with the models offered by Movchan Dimchishin and Torenton There was some indication that the coatings made metallurgical bonds with the substrate due to diffusion at the inter face The results of wear tests show that samples with chromium nitride have the best wear properties increasing the Thickness of chromium in vacuum evaporation and hard chromium by electroplating increased the wear propertie On the ba s isl fthis research it seemsthat chromium nitride coatings by PVD can be usedjor tribological applications similar to hard chromium plating rJ 1 1 r t VI i 1 JI J
