Abstract The goal is to study the effect of air injection in flow of liquid on a flat plate inorder to reducethe drag force For this purposea two dimensionalsingle phasecode waschangedto a two phasecode by adding a differential equationfor the volume of fluid andusing the VOF method The modified computercode was used for modeling the flow ofliquid on a flat plate with air injection and several different exampleswere studied Theeffect of severaldifferent parameters suchas densityand viscosity ratio Reynoldsnumber gas injection velocity and its angle and the position of gas injection in the lower or upperpart were studied The results showedthat the viscosity ratio has a large effect on the dragcoefficient but it has almostno effect on the thickness On the otherhand the densityratiohas little effect on the drag coefficient but has larger effect on the thickness When theReynolds numberis low the effectsof the injection from the upperand lower parts of theplates have different characteristicsboth on the layer thickness and the drag coefficient But by increasing the Reynolds number those differencesbecome small and eventuallyboth flows become similar The injected gas velocity has direct effect on the layerthicknessand the layer thicknessincreases with increasinginjection velocity The injectionvelocity has large effect on the drag coefficient until the gas layer obtained When formation of the gas layer on the plate is complete by increasingthe gas injection velocity the drag coefficient does not decrease more The angle of the gas injection does affect anythe layer thicknessbut does not affect on the drag coefficient Thus the effects of differentparameterson the flow structuresand the drag coefficient were studied with the existing computerprogramand it was shownthat the codehas ability of modeling two phaseflows d 1 I If U Ji l 1 IJ A v
