Abstract An effective factor in detennination of the bearing capacity of footings may be the slope of the ground on which they are located Constructing foundations on or adjacent to slopes may have a decreasing or increasing effect on their bearing capacity depending on the slope conditions Thus the bearing capacity calculations should be modified to involve such likely effects Several researchers have applied such modifications using some coefficients known as ground factors while others have used modified main bearing capacity factors for this purpose Regarding wide varieties in the available relationships for accounting the effect of slopes on the bearing capacity and the limitations of the common Hansen or Vesic ground factors it appears necessary to do more studies on the bearing capacity of footings located on or adjacent to slopes In this research study an attempt has been made to review this problem one more time and suggestmore comprehensive factors for detennination of the bearing capacity of such footings This has been made using a Finite Element Method through appropriate software known as PLAXIS 7 2 for footings located on or adjacent to sandy slopes To achieve the above mentioned goal as the first step the literature related to this subject was reviewed and the advantages and shortages of the common methods were evaluated The bearing capacity of footings adjacent to sandy slopes was then obtained as a ratio ofthe bearing capacity of the same footings on the flat ground This ratio was detennined asground factor G or g and the effects of various state and geometry parameters of groundand footing on it were investigated The results obtained from these investigations showsthat only the model geometry parameters i e slope angle and footing distance ratio fromslope edge were effective on the ground factors The ground factors were then detenninedfor different values of the effective parameters and were presented on appropriate graphs It was found that the ground factors from this research are more compatible withexperimental test results in comparison to the common values Finally based the researchresults some appropriate correlations were proposed for ground bearing capacity factors offootings on sandy soils The current investigation shows that the conventional Hansen andVesic relations for gq factor and Gemperline relation for g r factor are reasonable forfootings located at the edge of slopes However the proposed graphs and correlations fromthis research study cover all footing locations relative to slopes and may be considered as generalizedforms of the QT 1lnil factors which may be recommended for design purposes d 1 J u fw liJ l tr V I Q
