AbstractFlax Linum usitatissimumL is an oil seedcrop and its seedscontain 40 45 oil Based upon the genotype flaxseed oil is used as industrial or edible oil Since thegenotype planting date and seedingrate can affect on seedyield of flax this studywascarried out to investigatethe effect of thesefactorsandtheir interactionson agronomictraits of flax In this study nine genotypes flax wereplantedat different seeding of ratesof 500 700 and 900 seed m2 a factorial experiment as using a randomized completeblock design RCBD with three replications two planting datesof 17 March and 20 inJune2004 The resultsshowedthat all of thestudiedtraits were significantly affectedbyplanting date exceptthe number of branches plant 100 seed and weigh In the secondplanting date the number of days to emergence 50 flowering and maturity and also plant height seed yield seed yield plant capsules plantand seeds capsule were significantly lower but numberof seedlings m2 significantly higher than that of in wasthe fIrst planting date Average seedyield in the first and secondplanting dateswere 1620kg ha and 840 kg ha respectively Seedin rate also had significant effect on the numberof daysto maturity plant height seed yield seedyield plant capsules plant and number of branches plant In the fIrst planting date seed yield was significantly increasedfrom 1470 to 1689kg ha as seeding rate increased from 500 t0700 seeds m2 However increasingthe seedingrate to 900 seeds had no significant effect on seed m2 yield In the secondplanting date seedyield was not significantly affectedby seeding rate The results also showed that there were significant differences among the genotypesfor all of the traits The rangeof seedyield for the genotypesin the first and secondplanting dateswere 1141 to 2359 kg ha and 498 to 1806kg ha respectively A landrace population had the highest mean of seed yield in both planting dates Investigationof relationships amongthe traits indicatedthat they can be affectedby eachof planting date or seedingrates In general therewas a high correlationbetween seedyield and 100 seed weight in this study The resultof stepwiseregression seedfor yield also indicated that the importanceof the traits in detennining the seed yield variationwas affected by environmental conditions The resultof path analysisfor seed yield and seedyield plant in fIrst plantingdateand seeding rate of 700 seeds m2 which producedthe highest seedyield indicatedthat 100 seed weight had the highestdirect effect on seedyield but it also had a high negativeindirect effect on this trait via the numberof capsules plant Also in this condition the numberof seedlings m2 the had highest correlation coefficient with seedyield indicating that genotypeswith more capabilityto emergehad higher seedyield Generally the resultsof this studyshowed that higherseedyield in flax can be obtainedat seeding rate of 700 seeds and early m2 seeding the spring in 1 lJt ti Vji VIt
