Abstract Scaling is a common and costly problem in industries where hard water is used Thisphenomenon can be referred to precipitation and adhesionof less soluble salts on surfaces asa result of changes in some physiochemical conditions Scaling costs can be attributed todescaling or the poor thermal conductivity of scaled surfaces Chemical methods are widelyused for scaling prevention of water Use of chemicals is an expensive method and changesthe water composition They have tobe avoided for drinking water distribution Therefore physical treatments can be used becausethey do not change the potability of water In particular magnetic treatments have attractedmuch attention for over 50 years However their efficiency is still a controversial question In this work the effect of magnetic field on changesof water dielectric constant calciumcarbonate scaling rate and morphology have been investigated under different dynamicconditions such as pH temperature hardnessand magnetic field strength Results show that insome cases like water dielectric constant variation no significant result could be obtained because of low reproducibility of results However magnetic field has been effective onscaling rate and crystal morphology Measuring calcium concentration photographic evidenceand XRD analysis results indicates that magnetic treatment increases the ratio ofaragonite calcite of calcium carbonatedeposits 1Pt lfjj i I 1J
