Abstract316L stainless steel is one of the most consumable materials in orthopedic implants Certain types of orthopedic implants such as mono bloc hip stems are often made of twoelements welded together The reasons for doing such joining are rather technical orcommercial in nature than based on a clinical demand Corrosion of biomaterials canrelease the solutes i e the corrosion products at an implant site may cause histologicalchanges in the local tissue by either direct toxic effects or a local hypersensitivity reaction since elemental nickel cobalt and chrome as well as their compounds are known allergens Welds are recognized as zones which are particularly sensitive to corrosion In this study addition to evaluation of corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel in simulated bodyenvironment method of preparing the corrosion resistance of welded stainless steel wasinvestigated Thus solution heat treatment was performed on as welded stainless steels Then corrosion behavior of the as welded samples was compared with the heat treatedsamples Finally mechanical properties of the raw samples as welded samples in differentcondition and heat treated samples were evaluated Results of the electrochemicalexperiments indicated that corrosion behavior of weld metal WM was better than thebase metal BM This phenomenon attributed to secondary phases that were present in theBM Secondary phases in the weld metal are dissolved when base metal is melting due towelding process and are precipitated as the solid solution Based on the results ofelectrochemical analysis it was determined that the corrosion rate of couple WM andBM was more than of other parts Heat affected zone HAZ is responsible of thisphenomenon The adjacent zones of weld metal are classically less corrosion resistant thereby being attacked preferentially when the steel is exposed to corrosive environments PWHT decreased the corrosion rate and mechanical properties of the couple Nevertheless mechanical properties of the heat treated samples were in acceptable range to use as animplant in body environment
