AbstractMultiple input multiple output systems can considerably increase wireless communicationcapacity by using multiple transmit and receive antennas Multiple input multiple outputchannel capacity grows approximately linearly with the minimum number of transmit andreceive antennas Coding techniques designed for multiple antenna transmission are calledspace time coding These coding techniques introduce correlation between signalstransmitted from various antennas at various time periods There are several space timecoding techniques They can be classified into two general groups of coherent and noncoherent space time codes In coherent space time coding it is assumed that the receivercan accurately estimate the channel while non coherent space time codes do not requirechannel estimates either at the receiver or at the transmitter In this thesis different coherent space time coding techniques are introduced It is assumedthat individual channels between transmit and receive antennas can be modelled byindependent Rayleigh flat and slow fading processes Considering the receiver whichmakes the best performance complexity trade off the performance of space time codes interms of frame error rate is evaluated by simulations The effects of increasing the numberof transmit antennas on the code performance are also presented A space repetition codefor two transmit and one receive antenna based on one bit feedback from the receiver to thetransmitter is proposed and it is shown that its performance is always better than Alamouticode while preserving spectral efficiency Also its encoding and decoding complexity isless than Alamouti code Finally the trade off between performance complexity andspectral efficiency of different space time coding techniques are compared
