Abstract The plant speciesused for urban greeneryin arid and semi arid regions have lowspecies diversity and most of them are tender to drought and have high waterrequirements The present study was designed to selectthe drought resistantspeciesaccordingto their leaf water potential L WP to cultivate in Isfahangreeneryor forestryon arid and semi arid regions Two different setsof the experimentswere performed one on cultivated condition in research farm of naturalresources department ruT and ofthe other on the natural condition in four forestregionsof Zagros and Albours rangesduring 2004 and 2005 The farm experimentwas planned with 5 various irrigationregimes 40 60 80 100 and 120 of evaporation from a classA evaporation pan in 2different media a good gardensoil and a poor hillside soil Ten broadleaves tree and shrub specieswere planted in a factorial experimentin randomizedcomplete designwith 5 replications Two years datawere analyzedas compoundanalysis The result showedthat there are significantdifferencesbetween two soils the plant species the the irrigation regimesand the two yearsmeasurements the L WP amount The average for amountof L WP in the poor hillside soil was lessthan the good gardensoil The reason for significantdifferencesbetweensoil and species interactionfor L WP amountwasthe different reaction of plants species in two soil types The Quercus infectoria and Populus alba in good garden soil had the least and the highest amount of L WP respectively Regressionanalysis betweenthe amount of irrigation water and L WP amountshowedthat the increases L WP was accuredas a result of increasein amount in of irrigation Among the studiedtreesand shrubsspecies the cultivated conditionthe in Quercusinfectoria had the least LWP amount 3 9Mp and the Populus alba had the maximum L WP amount 2 35Mp compared with the otherspecies Quercusinfectoria Olea europea Fraxinusrotundifolia and Cersissiliquestrumspecies were recognizedas the most drought resistantspeciesand Platanusorientalis and Populusalba speciesare the most sensitiveto drought In the natural conditionsof the rangesdifferent tree and shrub species were studied in 4 regions Arasbaran of Tabriz Bavanat of Fars Nahavandof Hammedanand Hosseinabad Ghazvin The results of the experiments of showedthat there are significant differencesbetween speciesin the L WP amount Acer monspessulanumin Bavanat and Nahavand Cerataegus azarella in Arasbaran Fraxinusrotundifolia and Quercusbrantii speciesin Hosseinabad Ghazvin were the of most drought resistant species and the Cltis caucasicain Bavanat Salix alba in Arasbaran Populus nigra in Hosseinabad Platanusorientalis in Nahavandhad lower droughtresistance so they have a highest water requirementcomparing to the other species generalthe experimental In resultsshowedthat we can selectspecieswith high droughtresistance potential to introducethem for urban greeneries and forestry in arid andsemi aridregions 1 t J ctt i U I lilJ If V J
