Abstract In order to determine the effects of row spacing and planting density on growthindices canopy closure and yield of safflower local variety of Isfahan Koseh in summerplanting an experiment was conducted at Isfahan University of Technology ResearchStation in using a randomized complete block design with a split plot layout and fourreplications The main plots were row spacings and cm and sub plots wereplanting density and plants m Increase in row spacing and plant density decreased number of days from planting toemergence stem elongation head visible and flowering initiation and percent andphysiological maturity Decease in row spacing in and increase plant population increasedplant dry weight Dm and Leaf area index LAI The maximums Dm were obtained after flowering But the highest level LAI was day before flowering initiation Cropgrowth rate CGR increased as row spacing decreased and plant density increased Thehighest CGR in all row spacings was obtained after head visible Density of plants m produced higher CGR until flowering The highest relative growth rate RGR wasobtained at stem elongation RGR decreased until days after stem elongation as rowspacing increased Effect of plant density on RGR was negligible Net assimilation rate NAR decreased as row spacing in increased and the maximums were obtained at earlystem elongation phase NAR was slightly higher at initiation stem elongation with plantm density Leaf area duration LAD increased as row spacing decrease and plantingdensity increased However the trends of changes of LAD were similar for all rowspacings and planting densities LAD reache the maximum level at early flowering Plantheight increased as row spacing decreased and planting density increased Number ofstems per plant head per stem head per plant and per square meter seed per head seedyield per plant and per unit area oil percent and harvest index significantly increased asrow spacing decreased but seed weight slightly decreased Number of stem per plant seed per head head per plant and seed yield per plant significantly and harvest index andoil percent non significantly decreased as planting density increased Decrease in seedweight and number head per stem slightly decreased and number of stems per square andheads per unit area significantly and seed and oil yields non significantly increased In this experiment the highest seed yield about Kg ha was obtained at cmrow spacing and plant per square meter Summer planting of safflower in Insfahanseems feasible Growth indices such as plant dry weight LAI CGR and LAD seemsappropriate for describing the yield differences between planting densities and speciailyrow spacings
