Simulation of Pb Cd Cu and Zn Transport Under Two Rooting Systems in a Calcareous SoilAbstractAnthropogenic release of heavy metals HMs has resulted in a continuous buildup ofHMs in agricultural soils On one hand uptake of HMs by crop plants may lead to foodchain transfer to humans and on the other hand leaching of HMs with deep seepagemay cause groundwater contamination The objectives of this study were to assess themobility of Cd Cu Pb and Zn under two common crop plants with different rootingsystems including wheat Triticum aestivum with fibrous roots and safflower Carthamus tinctorious with a taproot system in the arid soils of Isfahan Iran Thestudy was conducted with undisturbed soil columns Typic Haplocalcid extracted froma wheat and a safflower field located in the same unit of soil type The top 10 cm of halfof the columns were artificially contaminated with Cd Cu Pb and Zn at concentrationsof 15 585 117 and 1094 mg kg 1 respectively Half of the contaminated anduncontaminated columns were planted with wheat and the other half with saffloweraccording to their previous cultivation history Leachate was collected continuously After the crops were harvested soil samples were collected at 10 cm intervals andanalyzed for water HNO3 and DTPA extractable metals HYDRUS 1D and MACROcodes were used to model metal transport in the soil columns and also metal uptake byplants Model parameters were estimated by inverse modelling using the SUFI 2procedure There was significantly increased metal leaching from contaminatedcolumns Plants enhanced the displacement of metals into subsoil Safflower resulted inlarger concentrations at deeper depths than wheat Metal concentrations weresignificantly p 0 05 higher in discharge and plants from contaminated than fromuncontaminated columns Because of discharge reduction in presence of plants due totranspiration total amounts of metals leached were in general larger in fallow thantreatments with plants The only exception was leaching of Zn from wheat columns which was larger under plants than under fallow Plants not only affected metal mobilitythrough actual root activity but also through effects on soil properties during previouscultivation history as there were clear differences in metal leaching between wheat andsafflower soils from fallow columns These were metal dependent indicating that theeffects were not only related to soil structure by the root systems but also to chemicalsoil properties The calibration results with MACRO were similar to those obtained byHYDRUS with the difference that adsorption constants were much closer to themeasured ones This indicates that in HYDRUS the adsorption parameters wereunderestimated in order to allow a deeper transport of metals which had actuallyoccurred due to macropore flow of undisturbed soil No attention has been paid up tonow to use HYDRUS and MACRO models to predict metal uptake by plants Howeverour results showed that MACRO model can be used to predict Cu Pb and Zn uptake by
