Abstract Recently discharge lamps are used as important artificial light sources in which light isproduced by gas radiation Due to their negative impedance characteristic discharge lampsrequire an additional device called ballast This current limiting device is divided into twocategories of electromagnetic and electronic ballasts Traditionally most used ballasts wereelectromagnetic However they have high volume and heavy weight flickering poorregulation and low power factor High frequency electronic ballasts are used extensively inlight systems Remarkable advantages of electronic ballast are small volume no audiblenoise long life and no flickering In order to improve the line current waveform and to adaptthe output voltage of the converter to lamp an isolated PFC Power Factor Correction converter can be used Regularly a basic electronic ballast consists of two main sectionsnamely the PFC and the DC AC inverter stage which has a relatively easy design procedureand good over all performance However this structure has more circuit components andthus higher cost In order to reduce cost volume and control complexity and to increaseefficiency the PFC stage and the inverter stage are combined to create a single stageelectronic ballast In this thesis a single stage charge pump electronic ballast is proposedand analyzed which not only fulfils the required characteristics of such converters but alsohas advantage of single switch Furthermore this circuit provides the soft switchingconditions After the analysis of the proposed converter the design procedure is presentedusing computer simulation results The experimental results confirm circuit analysis
