AbstractThe process of the comprehension of written natural language texts is usually called textunderstanding Text understanding includes different processes and has many applications One of the applications of natural language understanding systems is executing theimperative sentences which has a wide usage in dialog based systems and robotics Numerous works have been done in processing of Persian language but none hasconsidered the subject of Persian text understanding and performing actions after it In thisthesis first different stages of natural language understanding systems are introduced andsome well known text understanding systems are reviewed DANA a Persian textunderstanding system which we developed and implemented is introduced DANA is avirtual agent which is able to understand some simple Persian sentences responds to a feworders issued in Persian and answer some of user questions The goal is to specify therequirements of developing a Persian text understanding system and to propose suitablemethods for implementing such a system DANA accepts an imperative sentence or a question applies morphological syntactic andsemantic analysis on it and creates a meaning representation This meaning representationis later used to do some actions or answer the user questions In the phase of morphologicalanalysis finite state transducers have been used to represent the structure of Persian wordsand to model prefixes suffixes and orthographic changes that occur when two parts ofwords are combined Also in this phase a unification word grammar is written The wordgrammar is used for representing words features In syntactic analysis phase a unificationgrammar for a subset of Persian sentences was written and a top down chart parser wasused A syntactic based approach has been used to represent the meaning of every sentencein the semantic analysis In order to evaluate the system a graphical environment containing a table and some otherobjects has been designed The user can ask the system to change the objects positions orchange some features of them like their colors The results of this project can be used fordeveloping other types of natural language processing systems such as machine translationor question answering systems
