Abstract Isabghol Plantago ovata is an important medicinal plant and a natural source ofmucilage However little systematic research has been done on the agronomic factorsthat maximize yield and quality of Isabghol An experiment was conducted during2003 2004 to evaluate the effect of plant density on yield yield components andeffective medicinal ingredients of eight Isabghol accessions at the Agricultural ResearchFarm College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology The experiment wascomprised of eight accessions Mashhad Behbahan Ahwaz Shiraz Isfahan CharmahalBakhtiari India and pakistan and three plant densities 80 120 and 160 plants m 2 The experiment was laid out in factorial within a randomized complete block designwith three replications The analysis of variance showed that there were no significantdifferences between accessions for plant height spike length number of leaves perplant spike weight per plant and canopy closure percent There were no significantdifference between accessions for yield components number of branches per plant number of spike per plant number of seed per spike and 1000 seeds weight Differences among accessions for dry matter yield were significant Mashhad accessionhad the highest dry matter and seed yield among accessions and Behbahan accessionhad the lowest dry matter yield The lowest seed yield belonged to the CharmahalBakhtiari accession There were no significant differences among accession for swellingfactor mucilage contents and ratio of swelling factor to mucilage contents However Mashhad accession had the highest swelling factor and ratio of swelling factor tomucilage contents Plant density had no significant effect on plant height spike length number of leaves per plant and spike weight per plant Effect of plant density on canopyclosure percent was significant With increasing in plant density canopy closure percentincreased Plant density had no significant effect on yield components The effect ofplant density on dry matter and seed yield and harvest index was significant As plantdensity increased dry matter and seed yield increased but harvest index decreased Plantdensity had no significant effect on quality of Isabghol In addition there was nointeraction between accession with plant density for these parameters Seed yield hadsignificant and positive correlation with canopy closure percent and dry matter yield The results of this study showed that the optimum plant density for Isabghol in Isfahanmaybe between 120 to 160 plants m 2 and Mashhad accession might be suitable forconditions similar to this experiment
