Abstract Chatter is believed to be a particular case of self excited vibrations in rollingoperations as a consequence of the interaction between the structural dynamic of the millstand and rolling process Under certain circumstances this interaction may become suchenergy derived from the mill s driver hydraulic system tension system etc are capturedby the process and transformed into vibratory energy of structure A dynamic model of cold rolling process using finite element method FEM in orderto analysis of chatter vibration is considered in this thesis Similar to previous models themodel presented here has two sub models one for structure of the mill and the other for therolling process The structure of a mill stand is modeled as a system of linear spring andlumped masses in order to simulation the interaction between rolls An analytic rigidsurface is employed to simulate the contact surface of the work rolls the other part of thecontact pare are deformable master contact elements that are covered proper surface of thestrip where whole strip body is meshed by 2D deformable elastoplastic continueselements In this thesis for the first time an explicit dynamic FE analysis of the rolling process tochatter detection is presented using ABAQUS Explicit software The influence of somerolling parameters such as rolling speed reduction amount and friction coefficient onchatter vibration behavior are considered Results are compared with the some experimentaland analytical investigation found in the literatures shows good agreement bothquantitatively and qualitative
