Abstract Roads and environment are known as the main infrastructures of a city and existence ofthe alive respectively and these systems have many influences on each other Today environmental demolition trend by roads is severely increased with increment of producingvehicles and expansion of transportation networks which generally take into account as themain factor of polluting the urban environment and space In order to study the amount of urban roadside soil pollution to vehicular lead andcadmium and define the distribution trend of these elements in roadside soils the great cityof Esfahan was selected as the case study Two series of sampling sites were selected andsamples were collected from them Samples were made in the first group in 50 metersdistance from the road edges of four sites and in the second group from planted roadsidestream soils of thirteen sites In all sampling sites traffic parameters also were determinedwith attention to travel demand model These parameters were total traffic volume dailytraffic volume total traffic volume to road oriented width total traffic volume to totalcapacity velocity and aspect ratio Statistical presentation of data showed that lead and cadmium average concentration insurface soil 0 5 cm is more than depth soil 50 55 cm Average lead concentration eitherin surface or depth is more than background soil and its amount in most of samples wasmore than maximum acceptable concentration in agricultural soil By comparing the trafficparameters the main influencing traffic parameter on lead and cadmium concentrationswere defined as total traffic volume Statistically analyzing of data and using t student testshowed the two variables distance and total volume had significant effect on lead andcadmium concentrations in surface soil By regression analysis of data it was seen thatlead and cadmium concentrations were increased linearly and exponentially with totaltraffic volume respectively The proposed regression models in this research can be usedwith a good estimation for predicting lead and cadmium concentrations in roadside surfacesoil as a function of distance and total traffic volume Sensitive analysis of the proposedmodels was also showed that the models were more sensitive to the total traffic volumevariable than to the distance variable At the end for completion of this research as a suggestion a set of research topics inthe field of interaction between road and environment for study on the roads effects onthe environment was introduced
