Abstract Wire electro discharge machining WEDM is one of the most important processes of nontraditional machining that is widely used in aerospace automobile die making medical devices and industries during the past few decades Wire EDM provides the best alternative for machining new conductive materials exotic and HSTR high strength and temperature resistive material with the scope of generating intricate shapes and profiles with achieving a considerable surface finish and dimensional accuracy The performance of machined part can be devided in two categories surface quality roughness hardness thickness of surface layer and productivity such as material removal rate that are affected by many parameters Appropriate machining parameters selection has an important role in achieving the desired results and reduction of production time for economical machining operation Since surface roughness is one of the most important parameters in manufacturing and WEDM is a necessary process with a high cost it is required that the appropriate machining parameters are selected for an economical machining operation the published papers available do not provide any specific information on the selection of machining parameters for various machining conditions and materials In this research a series of experiments are designed based on taguchi method and carried out on 2601 and 2714 tool steel workpieces The level of importance of machining parameters on surface roughness and volumetric material removal rate is determined by using analysis of variance ANOVA The optimum machining parameter combination was obtained by using analysis of signal to noise S N ratio
