AbstractPlasam surface treatment has been applied in the textile industry for the modification ofsurface fibres In this study polypropylene PP nonwoven mats were treated with cold andlow pressure plasma for different periods of time 5 40mins powers 50 500W andgases air O2 N2 Ar in order to study the surface properties of the Fibres The effect ofplasma treatment on wetting properties were examined using contact angle and surfaceenergy measurement Also the diameter of the drop hydrophilisation diameter that isformed after an exposure time of 20 sec and water adsoprption time wetting time weremeasured The surface properties of plasma treated fibres were studied by Scanningelectron microscopy SEM A clear increase in the drop hydrophilisation diameter and surface free energy of PP due toplasma treatment was recorded Contact angle and wetting times were decreased becauseof increase in fibre wetability and some surface fibres etching that introduced some voids Statistical studies showed that best treatment conditions were treatment time of 30min plasma power of 500W and and under oxygen atmosphere Key words Plasma treatment polypropylene surface energy contact angle wettability
