Abstract Geotextiles are considered to be an important part of geosynthetic family ofmaterials Geotextiles have extensive applications in civil and agricultural engineering Current statistics points out to an increasing trend in the world wide use of this type oftextile fabric Therefore acquaintance with these functional fabrics in our country andtheir use is necessary In this thesis geotextile functions and its various types together with theirmanufacturing methods are firstly defined For the production of experimentalsamples of geotextile polypropylene fibers were manufactured Parameters affectingthe elongation of the fibers were examined A carding machine together with ahorizontal cross lapper was employed to make the non woven fibrous layers Alaboratory needle loom was also designed and fabricated The carded layers wereneedled using the above needle loom In total forty samples of geotextile wereproduced Both physical and mechanical properties such as mass per unit area thickness strength both grab and trapezoid puncture resistance index and grab elongationwere experimentally determined The effect of fiber parameters and those of fabricproduction process on properties of the resultant geotextile fabrics were investigated Results showed that marked improvement in the mechanical properties ofgeotextile occurs when high crimped fibers are used It was also found that the sameresult is obtained when the samples were needled on both sides using needles withlong barb distance and higher penetration depth It was concluded that it is possible tocontrol the grab elongation of geotextile by manipulating the elongation of theemployed fibers thus eliminating the expensive calendaring operation hitherto usedfor the control of grab elongation
