AbstractOne of the causes of diseases such as Asthma Cancer etc and also environmentalpollution is dust particles In contrast in many industries such as medicine painting etc itis required to use different size particles In this thesis one of devices to classify dusts andalso to filter dusty air which is called cyclone is simulated First a highly efficient cyclone called Estairmand cyclone is simulated By comparing withexperimental results the RNG k model is not suitable while RSM second and thirdorder models are appropriate for modeling cyclone flows In addition the efficiency forcollecting particles is closer to experiment of results for particles of size between 0 8 mto 2 m using GI model Next by choosing RSM second order model the effect of changing diameter and length ofthe vortex tube the exit pipe for clean air are investigated By reducing the diameter ofthe vortex tube the class of the cyclone is changed from W type minimum axial velocityin the core to V type maximum axial velocity in the core By reducing of the diameterof vortex tube the cyclone efficiency is increased until the class change is occurred But bychanging the class of cyclone particularly for large size particles the efficiency is reduced By slightly increasing the length of the vortex tube the cyclone efficiency is increased dueto decrease of pressure loss However by further increase in the length of the vortex tube the friction effects are appeared and the cyclone efficiency is reduced Finally by increasing the height of the cylindrical portion with respect to the conicalportion the effects of this geometry change on the efficiency of cyclone are investigated From numerical simulations it is observed that the cyclone efficiency and head loss isincreased by decreasing the height of the cylindrical part of the cyclone
