161Abstract In present investigation numerical simulations are performed to study flow andthermal field of non Newtonian fluids in rectangular circular elliptical trapezoidal triangular microchannels The flow is considered to be axisymmetric steady incompressible laminar and power law model is used to characterize the behavior of thenon Newtonian fluid All the physical properties are assumed to be constant The uniformvelocity and temperature profiles are considered at the entrance of microchannel The governing equations continuity momentum and energy are non dimensionalizedwith respect to specific variables The set of governing differential equations withappropriate boundary conditions are solved together using control volume finite differencemethod Axial velocity profiles centerline velocity the product of friction factor and Reynoldsnumber dimensionless bulk temperature hydraulic entrance length effect of non Newtonian fluid on pressure gradient dimensionless thermal entrance length the localNusselt number full developed Nusselt number total Nusselt number microchannelthermal resistance dimensionless wall temperature and bulk temperature for a wide rangeof power law indices N Reynolds number Re Peklet number Pe and slip coefficient s are obtained Results show the product of friction factor and Reynolds number and centerlinevelocity increase with increasing power law index while considering wall slip results inreduction of those parameters Relative difference of the product of friction factor andReynolds number between slip and non slip conditions enhances with increasing powerlaw index Consequently slip effect in dilatant fluids are stronger than that of pseudoplastic fluids Increasing Re Pe and s and N has significant effects on dimensionless bulktemperature Relative difference of the Nusselt number between slip and non slip conditionsincreases for higher power law indices consequently slip effect in dilatant fluids are morethan that of pseudo plastic fluids
