AbstractIn this paper with attention to increasing in application of piezoelectric materials for active vibration ofstructures the coupled effect of electrical and mechanical fields on the vibration of the smart structures hasbeen investigated Piezoelectric materials are widely used in structures as sensors or actuators By applying electrical voltage onthe piezoelectric materials one can make changes in their shapes On the other hand mechanical stresseswill cause electrical loads on a piezoelectric body In this study a code was developed for different sensor actuator plate configurations normally used in smartstructures namely plate with piezoelectric sensor plate with piezoelectric actuator plate with piezoelectricsensor and actuator and the plate only The 8 noded Mindlin Reissner plate element with reduced integrationwas used for determining thick plate with integrated sensors and actuators subjected to both mechanical andelectrical loadings Vibration responses of structure under different loading conditions can be calculated by use of the developedprogram By using a control law and a relation between actuator s and sensor s voltages and theirsderivatives one may achieved in reducing the vibration of the structure In order to validate the code twoexamples were considered The results showed that by choosing proper values for gain factor one mayachieve a great reduction in vibration amplitude of structure with piezoelectric in compare with one withoutpiezoelectric Finally the location of piezoelectric patch as a sensor or actuator has been optimized and best locations ofsensor actuator piezoelectric patches have been calculated in previous two examples
