Abstract NiAl and NiAl Al2O3 nanostructured powders containing different amount ofAl2O3 were synthesized by mechanical alloying technique The structural changes ofpowder particles were investigated by x ray diffractometry scanning electronmicroscopy and microhardness measurements Thermal stability of nanocrystallineNiAl and NiAl Al2O3 nanocomposite was investigated by annealing of milled powdersat 550 and 800 C for 4h Results showed that nanocrystalline NiAl can be successfully produced fromelemental Ni and Al powders The NiAl phase appeared to form by a continuousinterdiffusion of Ni and Al No self sustaining reaction was observed The mechanicalalloying of NiO 38 wtAl powder mixture resulted in the formation ofNiAl 40 vol Al2O3 after 0 5h with an explosive mode similar to self propagatingreaction In contrast for NiAl 10 vol Al2O3 NiAl 20 vol Al2O3 andNiAl 30 vol Al2O3 compositions self propagating reaction did not occur during themilling process due to the higher Ni content in initial mixture Increasing NiOconcentration reduced the start time of NiAl formation Microhardness of thenanocomposite powders increases with increasing Al2O3 content Thermal behaviourresults showed that nanocrystalline and nanocomposite powders are stable duringheating
