AbstractIn the present study two approaches were applied to synthesis nanostructured SiAlON Inthe first approach mixture of Al2O3 and Si3N4 were used as starting materials In thesecond approach milling of AlN and SiO2 was used to synthesis SiAlON The reactionproducts were characterized by X ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope Forproduction of Si3N4 Si was milled in N2 and NH3 atmosphere Milling of Si in N2 andNH3 atmosphere caused to formation of an amorphous phase Heat treatment of milledpowder showed that the amorphous phase was SiO2 In the second approach mixture of AlN and SiO2 were milled for 10 and 20 h The milledpowder mixtures were subsequently heat treated for 2 and 4 hours at 1200 and 1300 C Results showed that milling of starting powder mixture caused SiAlON to form at lowertemperature Increasing of heat treatment time at 1300 C increased the fraction of SiAlON Composition of SiAlON was found to be Si3Al3O3N5 phase However theheat treatment of 20 h milled powder at 1300 C resulted in SiAl7O2N7 phase
