Abstract Non linear loads result in voltage and current distortions in power systems Undesired harmonics in power systems cause transmission line losses decline of usefulpower and tribulation in communication systems efficiency etc Because of everincreasing harmonics in power systems several standards have been introduced forpower quality improvement In these standards some limitations have been used forharmonic injection from non linear loads Therefore several methods are proposed forharmonic elimination in power systems The first and traditional method is the use ofpassive LC filters Nowadays with the progress in semiconductor technology activepower filters APFs are extensively used In APFs with the proper injection of voltageor current the effect of non linear loads is reduced Electric power calculation undernon sinusoidal conditions is the cornerstone of APFs analysis Thus several electricpower definitions and relations between them are described in details in this thesis Then shunt and series APFs control methods and novel APF control strategies areevaluated A new control strategy in series APF is extended to a three phase four wiresystem The proposed method is more effective flexible with low cost and has thesame advantages as more complicated control methods such as instantaneous powertheory Finally the applications of soft switching converters for loss reduction in APFsare described and the active filter with DC link resonant inverter in three phasefour wire systems is simulated with PSIM software
