AbstractThe topographic correction of multi spectral satellite imagery data is a problem that hasbeen an important issue of remote sensing researchers since a long time ago They haveemployed different methods each having advantages and disadvantages It is important toknow which method of topographic corrections is the optimum one This is a question thathas not been yet precisely answered by researchers In the current study attempt was madeto assess different methods using artificial topographic model It was tried to find the bestsolution for every application on the corrected satellite imagery data In the first step theformer results of different methods of topographic corrections applied on the multi spectralsatellite data were collected Then an artificial topographic model was designed in order tosimulate a natural topography of an arbitrary area Subsequently this model was projectedby an artificial light source and different topographic correction algorithms were applied tothe satellite imagery data On the basis of the primary results quality advantage anddisadvantage of every method were assessed The results show that normalized cosinecorrection together with the normalization and statistic empirical correction are suitablemethods for correcting topographic effects of multi spectral satellite imagery data In the next stage topographic correction algorithms were applied to the ASTER data ofDarrezar Cu Mo porphyry system and Alamut poly metallic mineralization areas toenhance the hydrothermal alteration halos and linear structures By considering certainparameters suitable methods of topographic corrections on the satellite data were chosento locate different mineral exploration targets This research showed that the Minnaertcorrection C correction and statistic empirical correction have desirable results on regioncoverage classification Also C correction and statistic empirical corrections work moreefficiently than other methods in mapping hydrothermal alteration halos Finally a completely new method was invented to successfully omit shadows in satellitedata and it was tested on TM LANDSAT data of the Dally region Cu Au porphyrysystem located in the central part of Iran
