AbstractThe main objective of the present thesis is to develop a suitable lattice Boltzmann methodfor three dimensional compressible flow simulations This has been achieved by modifyinga two dimensional standard lattice Boltzmann method in order to simulate high speedcompressible flows Then the modified method has been extended to three dimension andfinally a parallel version of the method has been implemented To extend the standard lattice Boltzmann model to high Much number compressible flows the mean velocity is added to lattice particle velocities which results in a large velocity set This velocity set determines the destination of flow particles on the numerical lattice Onthe other hand in this method the need to store the distribution functions has beeneliminated through a unification of the equilibrium function and the relations fordetermining the macroscopic quantities In addition a much simpler form of theequilibrium distribution function compared to that of the standard model has beenintroduced As a result the amount of computation has been significantly reduced It canbeen shown that the present lattice boltzmann method satisfies the Navier Stokes equations At firs a computer program has been developed for two dimensional compressible flows A successful simulation of an oblique shock reflection over a flat plate demonstrates theability of the code in shock capturing Then the interaction of an oblique shock with aviscose boundary layer is simulated The results show the capability of the code for viscosehigh Much number fluid flow simulations Some model modifications have beenimplemented to accurately simulate the propagation of a shock wave in a square cavity andshock interaction after their collisions The 2D compressible flow over a forward facingstep has also been successfully simulated The developed 2D code has then been extended to 3D The 3D version of this method hasbeen validated through the simulation of several benchmarks such as a moving normalshock in a channel shock wave propagation in a cubic cavity and flow over a forwardfacing step Finally a parallel version of the present lattice Boltzmann model has been developed Theobtained Speed Up of the parallel lattice Boltzmann method is very satisfactory
