Abstract The coordination geometry of silver I and copper I complexes in their crystals aregreatly influenced by the solvent of crystallization type and number of ligands and thecounter ion used These coordination numbers vary from 2 to 6 In this thesis the synthesisof silver I and copper I complexes with different geometries which have been obtainedunder different experimental conditions and characterized by elemental analyses IR UV Vis and 1H NMR spectroscopies are reported These complexes are classified in fourgroups In group 1 the ca2en Schiff base and their silver I complexes with the formula Ag ca2en PPh3 2 ClO4 1 Ag ca2en 2 ClO4 2 Ag ca2en PPh3 X X ClO4 3 BF4 4 PF6 5 Ag ca2en PPh3 X X N3 6 SCN 7 have been synthesized Thecrystal structures of 3 4 5 6 and 7 have been determined by single crystal X raycrystallography The coordination geometry of the Ag I ion in complexes 3 5 isdistorted trigonal planar and complexes 6 and 7 are distorted tetrahedral In the UV Visspectra of complexes 2 and 6 the MLCT transition appears as a distinct shoulder in thelower energy region and for other complexes this band is obscured by the ligand centertransition In group 2 the three Schiff base ligands Phca2 dab Phca2en and ca2Ph and theircopper I complexes with the formula Cu Phca2 dab 2 CuI2 8 Cu Phca2en 2 I3 9 and Cu ca2Ph I 2 10 have been synthesized and their crystal structures have beendetermined by single crystal X ray crystallography Complexes 8 and 9 have mononuclearstructures with isolated linear CuI2 8 and I3 9 anions and complex 10 has adinuclear structure where two copper I ions are doubly bridged by two I ligands Asupramolecular motif is formed by local interactions P 4PE Parallel fourfold phentlembraces in the complex 8 In group 3 the Schiff base ligand Me pk 2en and the corresponding silver I andcopper I complexes with the formula Ag2 Me pk 2en 2 ClO4 2 11 Cu2 Me pk 2en PPh3 4 ClO4 2 2CHCl3 11 and Cu2 Me pk 2en PPh3 2 I 2 2CH3CN 12 havebeen synthesized and their crystal structures have been determined by single crystal X raycrystallography These complexes have dinuclear structures and two copper I and silver I ions are connected by the Me pk 2en bridging ligand Complex 11 shows a double helicalstructure with a Ag Ag bond between two silver I ions each having a distorted squarepyramidal environment The coordination geometry around each copper I ion incomplexes 12 and 13 is a distorted tetrahedron In group 4 silver I complexes Ag bpy PPh3 ONO2 14 Ag bpy PPh3 ClO4 15 and Ag bpy PPh3 PF6 16 have been synthesized and their crystal structure havebeen determined by X ray crystallography These complexes are mononuclear with adistorted tetrahedral geometry around Ag in complex 14 and a distorted trigonal planar incomplexes 15 and 16
