Abstract Gates as hydraulic structures are used for flow connection or interruption dischargemeasurement and control of water surface Between the other types of gates sluice gatesdue to ease in manufacturing and operation are widely used in hydraulic structures It hasdone many investigations on sluice gates of equal widths at the upstream and downstreamsections of the gate in the past In this research characteristics of flow when downstreamchannel width is less than that of upstream one are investigated Here 193 experiments onthree physical models of 405 mm width at the upstream section and 300 240 and 200 mmwidth at the downstream section have been completed Using three basic equations of fluidmechanics namely the energy momentum and continuity equations four semi theoreticalmodels have proposed for estimate free or submerged discharges In these models allparameters can be easily and accurately measured for practical purposes In the estimationof discharge the mean absolute error found to be less than 1 6 for free flow and 2 9 forsubmerged ones It was found that those momentum equations which were written betweenthe upstream and the contraction sections give the least error for both free and submergedflows In addition dimensionless experimental equations are given here to find the place oftwo vortices establishing at the upstream section of the gate Dimensionless equations arealso given for the wake formation in the plan at the downstream section of the gate
