Abstract In this study self propagation ignition synthesis of Fe Nb C with the aim of formationof Fe NbC composite was investigated from structural elements by mechanicalactivation and without activation Therefore powder mixture of Nb C with requiredstoichiometry ratio for formation of NbC was made and mechanical activation processin a ball mill was done with ball to powder ratio of 20 1 and for 0 1 2 3 5 10 hr thepurpose of this step activation of powder mixture until formation of NbC and optimumtime 2hr was obtained Then powder mixture samples with ratio of 70 percent iron and30 percent activated powder were made in the form of cylindrical shape with 10mmdiameter and 5m thickness The samples take under self propagation ignition synthesis In order to investigation of thermal profiles two samples were made from powder after0 and 2hr activation Information was acquired with thermocouple from half of heightof samples and was collected with computer system Samples were investigated by EDSand XRD The results indicated that initial mechanical activation of Nb C powder for2hr reduced start formation temperature of Fe Nb C composite and decreased thecontent of unreactive Nb and C during self propagation ignition synthesis
