AbstractIn recent decades rapid population growth resulted in production of solid wastes whichmay induce contamination for surface and ground waters Many efforts have been spenton composting and vermicomposting of the solid wastes More than 97 of solid wasteN is in organic molecules therefore may influence N mineralization and relatedenzymatic activities following waste application The objectives of this study were toidentify the effects of cow manure and filter cake vermicomposts compared to the initialmaterial and urea when similar amount of N were applied Aerobic and anaerobic Nmineralization rate net nitrification rate soil enzyme activities and wheat responses in apot experiment were investigated The experiment was designed as a factorialcombination of three soils and five N sources with three replications Composite soilsamples were collected from 0 30 cm depth The soil samples were air dried and passedthrough a 2 mm sieve The solid wastes were air dried and passed through a 4 mmsieve Regardless of the fertilizer treatments certain amount of the fertilizers to anequivalent of 100 kg N ha 1 were applied A control treatment was also run The effectsof soil type solid waste type and their interactions were significant Carbon and Nmineralization anaerobic index of N availability Nava nitrification rate urease and L glutaminase activities in urea amended soil were significantly highest than the controltreatment Plant dry weight and N uptake were increased as urea applied to the threesoils Carbon mineralization Nava N mineralization nitrification rate urease activity shoot dry weight second harvest N uptake and root dry weight in vermicomposts weresignificantly higher as compared to their initial material Nitrogen mineralization wascorrelated with C mineralization r 0 42 Nava r 0 83 nitrification r 0 66 shoot dry weight r 0 58 first harvest and r 0 50 second harvest and N uptake r 0 32 first harvest and r 0 54 second harvest A significant correlation was alsoobserved between urease and L glutaminase A strong association was observedbetween wheat N uptake and yield Overall the results of this study indicated that ashort C mineralization index can be an estimate of N mineralization Nitrogen uptakeand wheat biomass was increased as N mineralization enhanced Shoot weight wascorrelated with the enzyme activities
