Abstract The peptide group is an important construction unit in chemistry and biology and closeresemblance of amide groups to peptide linkages in proteins have been aroused byinorganic chemists in their coordination chemistry Consequently a large variety ofpyridine amide ligands have been synthesized for investigating their metal bindingproperties for providing models from the standpoint of bioinorganic chemistry for use incatalysis and as molecular receptors In addition the coordination chemistry ofbispyridylamides have found use in dendrimer synthesis molecular receptors platinum II complexes with antitumour properties and stabilization of metal ions in high oxidationstates The amide hydrogen atoms become labile when the ligand undergoes complexation whichoften resulted in the formation of a mono or a dianionic ligand Deprotonated amide groups havemaximum electronic delocalization and strong $ donating properties These groups usuallycoordinate via the nitrogen atom whereas coordination via oxygen is more frequent for neutralligands In this thesis the synthesis of the new ligand H2cbpb and Co cbpb Amine 2 X complexes which may have biochemical and photochemical applications 1 Co cbpb N MeIm 2 PF6 2 Co cbpb py 2 ClO4 3 Co cbpb 3 Mepy 2 PF6 4 Co cbpb 4 Mepy 2 PF6 5 Co cbpb prldn 2 PF6 6 Co cbpb pprdn 2 PF6 7 Co cbpb mrpln 2 ClO4 8 Co cbpb bzlan 2 PF6 are reported We succeeded to synthesize complexes with 8 acceptor axial ligands that could not besynthesized with bpb and bqb ligands The chlorine group on the equatorial ligand inducesa higher $ donating ability to the equatorial ligand which in turn stimulates the bondformation between Co III and 8 acceptor amines The H2cbpb and its cobalt complexeswere characterized by UV Vis FT IR 1HNMR and Elemental Analysis Complex 3 wasstructurally characterized by X ray diffraction Some electrochemically properties ofcomplexes 1 8 were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry and the trend in the observedredox potential was rationalized considering the axial ligand properties
