Abstract The coordinative sites of bispyrydilamide ligand are composed of amide nitrogens as donorand pyridine nitrogens as donor and acceptor atoms Tuning of charge density on central metalhas a significiant effect on the role plaied by a complex as catalyst enzyme model or otherapplications The electronic properties and stabilization of the desired oxidation state of a metal ioncan conveniently be modified by choosing the suitable diamine or using quinaldic acid derivateswith suitable substituents In this thesis the synthesis of the new ligand H2Mebqb and its complexes MII Mebqb I IV and N n Bu 4 CoII Mebqb X 2 V VI which may have biochemical and photochemicalapplications are reported I Co Mebqb V N n Bu 4 Co Mebqb N3 2 II Ni Mebqb VI N n Bu 4 Co Mebqb CN 2 III Cu Mebqb IV Cd Mebqb The fused phenyl rings in the structure of H2Mebqb as compared with that of H2Mebpb increase the accepting character of H2Mebqb Changes In the electronic properties can also affectthe reactivity of the central metal ion Conrary to the Mebpb cobalt complexes only complexes V and VI were successfully synthesized using two donor and acceptor ligands CN and N3 inthe axial positions In addition The steric demands of the ligand led to the formation of Ni Mebqb with adistorted square planar structure Due to the steric hindrance imposed by the Mebqb ligand thestructure of Co III complexes is also distorted octahedral The methyl group on benzene ring in the structure of H2Mebqb as compared with H2bqb andH2cbqb increases the solubility of the complexes making it possible to obtain the 1HNMRspectrum of Cd complex in DMSO the electronic spectrum of Ni complex in chloroform and toinvestigate the electrochemical properties of Ni II and Co III compounds The H2Mebqb and its complexes were characterized by UV Vis FT IR 1HNMR and ElementalAnalysis H2Mebqb was structurally characterized by X Ray Diffraction electrochemicallyproperties of ligand and complexes II V and VI were also investigated by Cyclic Voltammetry and the trend in the observed redox potential was rationalized considering the axial ligandproperties and structure of the equatorial ligand on the redox potential of these complexes
