AbstractNowadays the investigation and industrial plants in the field of biotechnology andenvironmental conservation have significant importance and the available possibilities in thenature have interest for researchers The development of vegetable fibers such as jute incomposites improves its properties so that FAO chose 2009 as the year of natural fibers The extraction of natural vegetable fibers form Typha australis leaves have been investigated Chemical extraction was used as retting using caustic soda sodium tripolyphosphate EDTA and anthraquinone at 60 100 C during 30 480 min The results showed that it ispossible to extract fibers from plant leaves The tenacity of the fibers was about 3 1 3 6 g denand the fineness 23 33 denier which have a higher tenacity comparing with other naturalvegetable fibers such as kenaf jute pineapple and coir The FTIR spectrum of such fibershowed its lignocellulosic origins Van soest methods showed that the fibers contain of 50 60 cellulose 25 30 lignin 9 12 hemicelluloses and 5 8 impurities which the amountof cellulose is higher than coir fibers Furthermore lignin component of the fibers can haveantibacterial and UV absorber properties The degree of crystallinity was 45 50 and havinga moisture regain of 8 9 5 which is higher than that of cotton fibers The density of fibers is 1 26 g cm 3 which is lower than cotton jute and hemp fibers The fibers such obtained dueto alkaline method of extraction had a pale yellow to dark brown hue Bleaching processgave a good white color to the fibers and an increase in lightness about 34 was observed The fibers showed good dyeability Good characteristics of Typha plant such as self growing growing in marsh and swamp and plant weeds etc needs more research We hope that toobserve the presence of this fiber in textile and other industries in the future
