Abstract Applying sod is an effective method of landscape design or replacement In this study a sod cutter which could be pulled by a two wheel tractor was designed fabricated and evaluated The sod cutter is consisted of an under cutter blade side cutter blades shanks frame and the supporting wheel After calculating the load applied to the blade the stress analysis of the frame was performed using COSMOSWORKS software In order to design different parts of the device some of physical and mechanical characteristics of sod were measured For determining the appropriate wheel surface material some tests for measuring the external friction coefficient of sod on two surfaces iron and plastic were obtained using a factorial experiment Vertical load in four different levels 0 9 8 19 6 29 4 N was applied to the samples In order to determine the required energy for cutting sod and also find the optimum soil moisture content at which the energy is minimum the impact test was performed The energy was determined at three different moisture contents 33 37 and 47 on wet weight basis The device was fabricated and after the defects were removed it was evaluated The required energy was calculated to be 147 7 J Evaluation tests on the designed device were performed with three approach angles for under cutter blade 0 6 and 13 deg in three different cutting depths shallow medium and deep The slip of driving wheels of the tractor and the draft of the sod cutter were measured The results showed that the iron surface had lower friction coefficient and its value was increased with an increase in vertical load applied to the sample surface Thus iron wheel was chosen for the device The required energy was calculated to be 147 7 J The evaluation results showed that the effect of approach angle and cutting depth on wheel slip and draft was significant at probability level of 1 Also results indicated that wheel slip increased with an increase in approach angle and cutting depth The highest wheel slip and draft were obtained with approach angle of 13 degrees and deep cutting depth The draft was increased with an increase in cutting depth The highest and lowest draft values were obtained at approach angles of 13 and 6 degrees respectively It could pdfMachine A pdf writer that produces quality PDF files with ease Produce quality PDF files in seconds and preserve the integrity of your original documents Compatible across nearly all Windows platforms if you can print from a windows application you can use pdfMachine Get yours now
