AbstractFurrow irrigation is one of the oldest methods of surface irrigation in which soil surface isused to convey and infiltrate water Gholam gardeshy irrigation snake shaped furrows is amodified form of furrow irrigation which has being used in Iran traditionally for a longtime but to date there is no study about the erosion and the effect of furrow inflow rate onrunoff and erosion of this method of irrigation To measure the erosion and runoff of thismethod of irrigation and to compare the results with furrow irrigation two experimentalfields of University and Khazaneh with different soil textures field slopes and furrowinflow rates were used to collect data At University field with clay loam soil texture plotswith different furrow inflow rates but with constant field slope were used to determine soilerosion for both Gholam gardeshy and furrow irrigation methods The experimental plotshad the slope of 0 4 and the inflow discharges of 0 6 1 06 1 42 and 2 liters per second At Khazaneh field with clay soil texture plots with different furrow slopes but withconstant furrow inflow rates were used to determine soil erosion for both Gholam gardeshyand furrow irrigation methods The experimental plots had the inflow discharge of 1 06liters per second and the slopes of 0 4 1 1 3 and 2 Three replications were used for eachtreatment for both irrigation methods The furrows were irrigated for the first time with noplants Equipments including constant head water delivery system to the furrows wereinstalled at each field and were used to irrigate the experimental plots Field data such asfurrow inflow hydrograph furrow outflow hydrograph advance furrow cross section anderosion furrow net erosion were collected for both methods The results showed that forthe same irrigation time slope soil texture and discharge the velocity of advance tail waterrunoff and erosion are lower significantly at 5 level for Gholam gardeshy irrigation ascompared to the common furrow irrigation method As the slope of the field increased theadvance distance and the difference between two methods increased In both methods thedetermined erosion and advance equations were able to predict the field data withcoefficient of determination of more than 94 As the slope of field increased erosion andrunoff in both irrigation methods increased and the differences were significant at 5 percentlevel As the furrow inflow rate increased the erosion and runoff in both irrigation methodsincreased and the differences were significant at 5 percent level The soil erosion for bothirrigation methods was higher for the clay loam soil as compared to the clay soil and thedifferences were significant at 5 percent level Gholam gardeshy irrigation can be used asan alternative choice for ordinary furrow irrigation for fields with high slopes in order toimprove irrigation performance and reduce erosion and runoff
