Abstract High yield potential and grain quality of triticale derived from wheat parent and itsresistance to stresses derived from rye parent To evaluate morpho physiological andgrain quality traits of 18 triticale lines comprising 9 doubled haploid DH and 9corresponding F6 lines an experiment was conducted at research farm of College ofAgriculture Isfahan University of Technology located in Lavark Najaf Abad in 2007 A randomized complete block design with 4 replications was used Results of analysisof variances revealed significant differences among genotypes for most of studied traitswith the exception of SDS sedimentation volume The tested DH and F6 lines differedsignificantly for most of studied traits with the exception of the followings number ofspikes per area unit grain weight per spike SDS sedimentation volume test weight gliadine and length of flag leaf The F6 line number 9 possessed the highest grain yield Significant and positive correlations were observed between grain yield and withnumber of spikes per area unit number of grain per spike grain weight per spike 1000grain weight biological yield harvest index length of flag leaf and flag leaf area Among grain yield components number of spike per area unit possessed the highestcorrelation with grain yield The highest genetic coefficient of variation was observedfor chlorophyll and the lowest one was for days to maturity The highest and the lowestbroad heritability estimates were 99 5 for plant height and 28 3 for SDSsedimentation volume respectively Also grain yield heritability was low The results ofstepwise regression showed that number of spike per area unit grain weight per spikeand spike length contributed in 98 6 of observed variation for grain yield The resultsof stepwise regression showed that gliadin and glutenin secalin could justify 52 ofobserved variation for grain protein The results of factor analysis indicated 6 factorswhich explained 62 73 of total variation of data The results of path analysis on theremaining characters in the regression model showed that grain weight per spike had thehighest positive direct effect on grain yield Effective grain filling rate among genotypeswere 0 75 to 2 18 mg per day The highest and the least effective grain filling rate wereobserved for DH line numbers 16 and 12 A negative and significant correlation wasobserved between effective grain filling rate and period Overall DH lines performedsuperior for agro morphological traits and F6 lines were superior for physiological andgrain quality related traits It seems plausible to use grain weight per spike and numberof spike per area unit as a selection criterion in breeding programs for producing highyield cultivars of triticale
