Modeling and Identification of Power Quality Indices in the Presence of Capacitor Banks and Determination of Switched Capacitor Bank Location in Distribution Systems Hadi Khani Khani@ec iut ac ir March 7 2009 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Mehdi Moallem Moallem@cc iut ac ir Saeed Sadri Sadri@cc iut ac ir AbstractC APACITOR banks are widely used to improve power factor and voltage profile reduce line losses and increase line capacity in distribution systems However overvoltage transients resulting from capacitorswitching can cause adverse impacts on sensitive electronic loads With large number of capacitor banks ondistribution systems capacitor switching transients are the most common transient events on thedistribution systems second only to voltage sag disturbances On the other hand capacitors in harmonic polluted networks can cause problems such as increasing voltage distortion resonance overheating andexplosion of capacitor banks The objective of this thesis is investigate the mutual power quality effects ofcapacitor banks and distribution systems and to present the guideline for reducing these effects withspecial emphasis on the estimation of switched capacitor bank location in the distribution systems usingtransient waveform analysis The theoretical basis is discussed the analysis and modeling results areobtained through the IEEE standard 13 bus distribution system simulation Effects of the capacitors onpower factor resonance distortions and harmonic pollution metering methods are investigated Theresonant frequency of the distribution systems is estimated through FFT based methods and existingcapacitor switching transient waveforms Transient energy phase and RMS value changes of feedercurrents and instantaneous changing of feeder voltages and currents are used in order to determine theswitched capacitor bank location in distribution systems In this thesis two new indices are proposed fordetermination of switched capacitor bank location One of the indices is based on bus voltage and feedercurrent instantaneous changing and the other one is based on feeder current instantaneous changing Theexact distance of switched capacitor bank from monitoring location is estimated The switching instant andthe values of voltage and current at the switching instant are detected using wavelet transform Finally anovel algorithm is proposed in order to determine the exact location of switched capacitor banks indistribution systems The theory of the new algorithm is proved and its efficacy is validated throughsimulation Key Words Capacitor switching power distributions power quality transient analysis wavelet transform
