Modelling and optimization of the process of oxygen separation from air using porous zeolite Zeinab Hosseini Dastgerdi z hoseini 61@gmail com 2009 1 17 Chemical Engineering Department Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Dr S Mohammad Ghoreishi ghoreshi@cc iut ac ir Dr Ali Akbar Dadkhah dadkhah@cc iut ac ir Abstract There has been a sharp raise in application of cyclic adsorption processes in lastdecades This increase has been mainly due to economic and purity advantages of theseprocesses One class of cyclic process is pressure swing adsorption PSA with highselectivity high throughput and high efficiency Consequently more and more PSAsystems are in operation in gas separation processes of chemical industry In PSAprocesses adsorbent selectively adsorbs the adsorbate molecules from a gas mixture andthen desorbs that part by pressure reduction These processes are in constant developmentand by addition of new steps their performance are in raise One of such steps is thepressure equalization step which improves the unit s efficiency A small scale applicationof pressure swing adsorption is employed to provide oxygen enriched air for the crew of anaircraft This kind of system is preffered over bottled oxygen because it is safer and it doesnot place a limitation on flight time In this study after modelling and simulation of apressure swing adsorption system and validating the results skarstrom cycle and skarstromcycle with pressure equalization step for production of high purity oxygen were analyzedand the influence of different parameters on process performance were studied Then theaircraft oxygen production system was analyzed and by adding new boundary conditionsspecific to this process model was validated By the application of dimensionlessparameters the influence of these parameters was also studied By the application ofsuccessive quadratic programming which is one of the best tools for solving numericaloptimization problems the dimensionless parameters were optimized This resulted in away to optimize a unique small scale oxygen generation system with specific boundaryconditions which is ready to design and fabrication Key WordsPressure Swing Adsorption oxygen nitrogen optimization zeolite
