Experimental production of tungsten disulfide nanoparticles Seyyed Salar Meshkat s meshkat 61@gmail com 2009 02 04 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M sc Language Farsi S Mohammad Ghoreishi ghoreshi@cc iut ac irAbstract Nanotubes of WS2 have indeed been produced and characterized by Tenne andco workers in 1992 A facile large scale and low cost route was used to synthesizethe nano tubes of WS2 nanoparticles by following the decomposition of WS3 Wetherefore decided to examine the transformation of WS3 at high temperatures in ahydrogen atmosphere Having succeeded in obtaining WS2 nanotubes by this means we sought to prepare these nanotubes by hydrogen treatment of ammoniumthiomolybdate which is the precursor of WS3 WS3 was prepared by the thermaldecomposition of NH4 2WS4 at 450 C in a nitrogen atmosphere The WS3 soobtained was X ray amorphous Heating WS3 in a stream of H2 at 800 1100 C gavean excellent yield of WS2 nanotubes The as synthesized nanotubes of WS2 are of tubestructure with an average size of about 6 18 nm The composition morphology andstructure of the products were characterized by XRD SEM and Edax The influencesof the main reaction conditions were investigated and the possible growthmechanisms are proposed Furthermore the as synthesized nanotubes have manyapplications such as lubricants catalysts hydrogen storage bodies super shockabsorbers Particularly in the field of lubrication ultralow friction properties havebeen observed when WS2 materials were used as solid lubricants which made thembecome one of the focuses of research Key WordsNanotube WS2 Lubricant Catalyst Scanning Electron Microscopy
