Comparison of separating gravity anomalies from Rudan region using fractal and conventional methods Mona Pishdadian Pishdadian@mi iut ac ir 2009 Department of Mining Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Dr N Fathianpour and Dr F DoulatiAbstractGeophysical methods are highly regarded as effective means of detecting properties of subsurfacebodies such as geometrical physical and geomechanical parameters Among many geophysicalmethods the gravity and magnetics methods also known as potential field techniques have foundmore attraction due to their more cost effetiveness survey speed and ease of interpretation whenit comes to the detection of hydrocarbon reservoir exploration Interpretation of gravity data is considered as the most important step in any exploration programand therfore requires sufficient experience in locating subsurface bodies and in partcularseparating them from background host formations In general determination of geologicalstructures such as anticlines salt domes and faults which are considered as the most importantcontrolling factors in hydrocarbon exploration program is highly demanded In this thesis gravitydata surveyed over a potential hydrocarbon trap in Rudan district in Bandar Abbas province south of Iran are interpreted using two different fractal methods which are regarded as effectivemethods for separating and detecting geophysical anomalies The two different fractal methodsused are called Bugger Area and power spectrum methods Using Bugger Area method theanomalous zones were determined through finding anomalous threshold whereas in employingthe power spectrum method the fractal dimension determined and used to define the optimumdensity needed for Bouger anomaly correction scheme In addition to the applied fractal methods a number of useful filtering techniques such as firstvertical derivative upward and downward continuations of gravity field plus surficial trendremoval with varying degrees were employed resulting in the production of maps which wereaided in the interpretation of the gravity data Joint analysis of all results led to the detection of ananticline structure with an surface coverage of 227 5 square kilometer which is considered worthyin terms of hydrocarbon exploration and is recommended for conducting further investigationsusing seismic techniques Key words gravity fractal methods Bugger Area power spectrum filtering techniques firstvertical derivative upward and downward continuations trend surface
