Integrated management of Aphis gossypii Glov using Chrysoperla carnea Steph and insect growth regulating hormone analogues pyriproxyfen and buprofezin in greenhouse Maryam Sattar Sattar maryam@gmail com Submitted on February 28 2009 Department of plant protection Collage of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi1 R Ebadi Prof Supervisor ebadir@cc iut ac ir2 B Hatami Prof Supervisor bhatami@cc iut ac irAbstractCotton aphid Aphis gossypii is one of the most important pests of the vegetable crops in greenhouse speciallycucumber that causes reduction of quantity and quality of the yield Both nymphs and adults of this aphid suckplant juices disrupt plant metabolism and cause quantitave and qualitative damage to the plants This aphid ispolyphagous with wide a host range that often exhibit host associated genetic structure It is also a vector ofdifferent plant viruses Due to the use of high amount of chemical insecticides for controlling this aphid oncucumber and the short growth and developmental period and gradual harvesting of cucumber use of integratedpest management IPM is necessary In IPM programs the emphasis is on the application of insecticides ifnecessary in sensitive stages of pests and tolerant stages of the natural enemies The common green lacewingChrysoperla carnea is an important natural enemy of several insect pests can be used in greenhouses Using thegreen lacewings in combination with less hazardous chemical compounds such as insect growth regulators IGRs to control aphids in greenhouse could be effective and less hazardous to consumer than conventionalinsecticides These compounds commonly doesn t have cumulative properties They are instable in theenvironment and have low toxicity to honey bees beneficial insects and warm blooded animals The IGRspyriproxyfen and buprofezin are classified as reduced risk insecticides because their modes of action are safe forhumans Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone mimic inhibiting egg hatching and metamorphosis into the adultstage Buprofezin is a chitin synthesis inhibitor that inhibits molting These two insecticides allow growers toalternate between different modes of action thereby reducing the rate of resistance evolution to eitherinsecticide This study was carried out to find suitable concentration of pyriproxyfen and buprofezin forcontrolling A gossypii in laboratory The lethal effects of these compounds on small nymphs 1 3 olds of A gossypii were studied using completely randomized design and leaf dipping bioassay technique with seventreatments including six concentrations of each of compounds and control treatment distilled water Theconcentrations for buprofezin were 800 529 350 231 153 100 ppm and for pyriproxyfen were 1000 725 525 381 276 200 ppm There were five replications in each treatment The mortalities were recorded after 96h andpercent mortality calculated by Abbott formula Data were analyzed using probit analysis procedure by POLO PC software Results revealed that effect of these compounds increased significantly as concentration increased Suitable concentrations of pyriproxyfen and buprofezin were 1000 and 800 ppm respectively The LC50 and99 confidence limit values for these compounds were 436 98 316 69 512 75 ppm and 386 33 308 81 454 73 ppm respectively EC50 values for these compounds were 924 30 791 63 1128 73 ppm and 835 41 733 55 988 91 ppm respectively showing that buprofezin exhibited stronger activity than pyriproxyfen Sublethal concentrations of these compounds LC10 for buprofezin and pyriproxyfen were 172 34 103 89 230 72 ppm and 223 51 187 14 310 92 ppm respectively Application of LC10 of these compounds on smallnymphs of A gossypii in laboratory showed that treated nymphs with buprofezin molted 2 extra showed andsuper numerary molted nymphs with 3 extra molts were found when the small nymphs were treated withpyriproxyfen All treated nymphs molted normally to adult stage but their reproduction r
