Finite element modeling of the welding process Of the spirally welded pipes Paper Presenter S M M Nasiri1 M R Forouzan2 S M M Nasiri S J Golestaneh3 1 Isfahan University of Technology M Sc 2 Isfahan University of Technology Ph D 3 Sadid Pipe and Equipment Company M Sc Corresponding Author s E mail Forouzan@cc iut ac ir Abstract Three dimensional model of submerge arc welding of the spirally welded pipes was simulated by using ANSYS software in order to estimate residual stresses on the heat affect zone HAZ First the thermal model was analyzed The transient temperature distributions predicted by the thermal model is used for loading the pipe body on a mechanical model Finally by the finite element analysis of the mechanical model the transient and the residual stresses was computed In this analysis the weld heat source model based on the Goldak s double ellipsoid power density distribution was applied It was necessary to decrease huge tensile residual stresses In order to avoid stress corrosion cracking SCC One of the industrial solutions is to apply very high internal pressure which is named hydrostatic test process Residual stresses after the welding process were compared with residual stresses after hydrostatic test process In this study the experimental data was measured by using hole drilling method The simulation results were compared with experimental data to approve the precision of the modeling comparison between residual stress distributions which measured by experimental and the numerical analysis are given that the experimental data validate the exactness of the finite element method from estimating the residual stress distributions Keywords Spiral pipe Finite element method Submerged arc welding Residual stress Hole drilling method 2 Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering2 Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department Isfahan University of Technology3 Master of Science
