Synthesis characterization of novel optically active poly amide imide s and poly ester imide s containing aminoacid and p t butyl calix 4 arene units and study of sorption ability towards metal ions and modification of polyacrylic acid with p t butyl calix 4 arene diol and diamine derivatives for sorption of metal ions Sakineh Habibi E mail sakinehhabibi@yahoo com Date of Submission 1388 3 27 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran1 Supervisor Abdol Reza Hajipour E mail Haji@cc iut ac irDepartment Graduate Program Coordinator Bijan Najafi Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory College of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 Iran fax 983113912350AbstractIn this project p t butyl calix 4 arene diol and p t butyl calix 4 arene diamine derivatives were synthesized andused in the polymerization reactions Also a series of optically active monomers were prepared by condensationreactions of pyromellitic anhydride benzophenone diphthalic anhydride and hexafluorodiphthalic anhydridewith some optically active aminoacids The polycondensation reactions of the optically active monomers and thecalix diol and diamine derivatives were carried out using three methods The poly amide imide s and poly ester imide s were prepared in good yields in the range of 70 88 and moderate inherent viscosities of 0 18 0 38dL g All of the polymers were fully characterized by FTIR 1H NMR and elemental analysis Some physicalproperties such as inherent viscosity optical activity solubility thermal stability and sorption extraction abilityof the polymers were investigated Thermal behavior of the polymers was investigated by TGA DTG and DSCthermograms The complexation ability of the monomers and polymers towards alkali metal cations Na K and Cs silver Ag and toxic heavy metal cations Cu2 Cd2 Co2 and Hg2 were evaluated using picrateextraction experiments and UV Vis spectra On the other hand polyacrylic acid was used as a useful industrialpolymer to immobilize the calix diol and diamine derivatives on the polymer chain The modified PAAs wereused for extraction of Na K and Ag Cu2 Cd2 Co2 and Hg2 The hydrophobically modified PAAs showedgood extraction ability towards these cations Keywords Calixarenes Ionophores Optically active Poly ester imide s Poly amide imide s Poly acrylicacidIntroductionCalixarenes have generated considerable interest Gutsche 1998 as useful building blocksfor the synthesis of receptors for cations anion and neutral molecules During the lastdecades they have attracted much attention Asfari and Bohmer 2001 as a type of keyreceptor in super molecular receptors The increasing interest for these compounds isstimulated by the simple large scale synthesis of calixarenes and the different ways that theycan selectively be functionalized at the lower phenolic groups or upper rim aromaticnuclei Vicens and Bohmers 1991 To date various calixarenes that posses ketone amine ester amide carboxylic acid or other functional groups Tabakci et al 2005 Bozkurt et al 2005 Oshima et al 2003 have been synthesized for separation recognition discriminationand catalysis Memon et al 2004 Ediz et al 2004 Among them chiral recognition theprocess in which an enantiomerically pure host molecule such as a chiral calixarene selectively binds one of the enantiomers is one of the most essential reaction processesoccurring in the living systems Gaeta et al 2005 Therefore chiral calixarenes haveattracted increasing research interest in the fields of organic biological and medicinalchemistry
